Spotlight: Mac Russian Red Lipstick

Drumroll, please... say "hello" to the only Mac lipstick I own!

This is not purposeful, although I am sometimes put off by the cultish following of Mac Cosmetics.  But this, my friend, is a good lipstick.  Not too blue, not too orange.  JUST RED.  Anyone can wear this.  The matte formulation can be a little drying, but the problem can be diminished if you apply a good balm underneath.  (I suggest Smith's Rosebud Balm.)  I wore this makeup while taking my youth group Christmas-caroling.  Seventh-graders listen better if you wear red lipstick.
I took these pictures whilst trimming my bangs.  Always logical, I am.

Color: Matte rich red.
Price: $15.00
Packaging: Sturdy, sleek, black bullet-shaped container.
Scent:  Some say Mac lipsticks smell like vanilla, but mine has no scent.
Of note:  Don't be like me; use a lipliner.  Also, here are other pictures and reviews.

Would I repurchase? Honestly, probably not.  I love experimenting with different brands too much.

Hem Your Pants

... or at least cuff them!  Ah, the perils of short legs and online shopping.

Hat: Gap
Dress: Target
Peter Pan Necklace: Shoplately
Jeans: American Eagle High Rise Skinny
Pumps: Bronx

Do you agree that the necklace makes this otherwise boring outfit?  I am mildly obsessed with the flash sale site Shoplately, especially the seller Glint&Gleam.  Good quality, fast shipping, attentive customer service, and CHEAP.  I got this sturdy yet beautiful necklace for twelve bucks.  If you order, check RetailMeNot for coupon codes to get things even cheaper.  Highly, highly recommended.  I don't purchase jewelry anywhere else anymore!  (I swear they are not paying me to say this.)

Happy Christmas Eve!  I am over the moon right now because my house is cleaner than it has ever been, no exaggeration. Darin and I did the deed (cleaning, not that deed) yesterday while blasting Christmas music and eating tamales.  Now I am off to bake these cookies with my truly nice children.  I can't express how contented I am right now.  I can't express how deciding to be contented has changed my life this past month.  Joy is so much better than happiness.

Merry Christmas.

Spotlight: TheBalm 'Cabana Boy' Blush

Here is the makeup from my last post.  It was simple, pretty quick, and perfect for any time of the year.  More subtle than I usually go for, but I've been forgoing the colorful eyeshadow lately for time's sake.
Revlon Colorstay Foundation in Sand Beige
Maybelline Age Rewind under-eye concealer and brightener
TheBalm blush in Cabana Boy
Tarte bronzer in Park Avenue Princess
Benefit Highbeam

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough as Taupe
Urban Decay Naked in crease
Urban Decay Foxy up to brow
TheBalm Envious Erin in inner corner
Almay Get up and Grow Mascara

NYX Round Lipstick in Tea Rose

On to the blush!  TheBalm's powder products are great.  You really can't go wrong with their blendable, pigmented eyeshadow and blush formulas.  Cabana Boy wasn't as pigmented as my other TheBalm blushes, but it is buildable without getting chalky.  Despite the sexist tagline, I recommend this blush.  Pardon the chipped polish!
Color: Warm plummy-pink with a faint sheen.
Price: $21.00 for a whopping 8.5 grams.  I got mine off Hautelook for $10.50.  TheBalm shows up on the flash sale site every two months or so.
Packaging: Sturdy cardboard with a mirror.  Strong enough to inadvertently use as a coaster.
Scent: None.
Of note:  No parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, phthalates, GMOs, or triclosan.
Where to buy:
Would I repurchase? For $10.50, yes!  I find that it is a subdued version of Sleek's Pomegranate, which I actually prefer for its crazy pigmentation and shimmer.

Tried it?  Loved it?  Loathed it?  Share!

Hazelnut Fest-ing

Mount Angel recently had its first annual Hazelnut Festival, so naturally I had to cough up the exorbitant $5 cover charge and attend.  It was worth every penny.  There was an old-fashioned radio show, good music, Santa Claus, a children's craft table, local beer, hot mulled wine for beer-loathers like myself, and hazelnuts in every form.  The weather was nice enough to forgo the car and just walk.
Beret: Forever 21
Pin: my grandmother's
Dress: Target
Cardigan, Necklace: Gap
Shoes: Seychelles
In true Oregonian fashion, the weather is currently freezing, but not cold enough to snow.  If I write this, it will blizzard tonight.  Hear that, Murphy?

Be cozy!

Spotlight: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss

Back so soon? Heck yes I am!
Have you ever tried Revlon's Super-Lustrous lipglosses?  If you are in the market for some lipgloss but don't want to shell out twenty-something dollars per tube, this is a good way to go.  A Chanel-esque packaging, good pigmentation, easy to layer, minimally sticky formula, and virtually no scent.

On to the awkward sleepy pictures!
Firecracker, Coral Reef

 Lilac Pastelle, Foiled

Firecracker is a gorgeous sheer red with an orange tinge.  It looks amazing layered over red lipstick. Coral Reef is a universally flattery pinky coral. It smells very faintly of Creamsicles.  Lilac Pastelle is probably my favorite because of how unusual it is; a beautiful creamy lavender, but pink enough to be 'normal.'  Foiled is a great shimmery nude.  Apply it on the center of your bottom lip over lipstick to make your lips appear fuller.  ( I learned this tip from the wonderful Emily Noel.)

This is Coffee & a Cardigan approved!
What's your favorite drugstore lipgloss?

The Last Summer Day

Ah, that's more like it.  AUTUMN.

My summer 2012 wardrobe consisted of yoga pants, t-shirts, and sports bras with the occasional comfortable bootcut jean.  I blame it on breastfeeding.  (And lack of creativity. And laziness. And Tillamook ice cream.)  Along with the cooler weather comes inspiration.  I am excited to shop my own closet for a while and avoid fashion trends for the sake of fashion trends.  This outfit is definitely Louise.  The hat, the combination of pink and red, my worn-to-death double-breasted skirt, and unnecessary collar buttons.  I very comfortable... as soon as I traded the wedges for Pumas. The arch on these is stupidly arched.  Oh, and these are the famous $1.99 Seychelles from Amazon Warehouse Deals.  Now you know my secret.
Happy last day of summer, everyone!  Are you as excited for fall as I am?

Urban Decay on Hautelook

As you know, I've been getting into makeup this past year.  I have found some pretty spectacular high-end and drug store products, but when it comes to eyeshadow, high-end proves to be the best for me.  Urban Decay eyeshadow is my absolute favorite!  The colors are rich, blendable, and long-lasting.  Urban Decay recently changed its eyeshadow packaging and formula, so naturally their 'old' stock has to go away.  It's coming to Hautelook tomorrow for a couple days!  You can bet I will be on the computer at 8am on Friday; I would love to snag some of their amazing matte eyeshadows and palettes for drugstore prices.

Two of my favorite looks using UD products:
Have you tried Urban Decay before?  What's your favorite product?

the Tortoise & the Hair

It all started when I was sick and watching too much "Parenthood."  There was something about one of Mae Whitman's hairstyles that just got me.  I showed Darin a picture, and that was that.  He broke out the scissors and hacked away with gusto... until he got to the bangs.  I put one hand up to my forehead, yelped, and ran into Rowena's bedroom, half-crying, half-yelling.  "Too short, too short, too short...."  Darin stomped around, sweat collecting on his forehead, muttering that rare D-word and "This is stupid! This is stupid! Augh!"

We eventually collected ourselves and he finished the job.  Yes, reader.  I am terribly impulsive when it comes to my appearance.  I love experimenting with fashion trends, bright lipsticks, eyeliner, and yes, my hair.  I haven't really done anything drastic since I became (dun dun DUN) a mom.  When I woke up the next morning, I took one look into my vanity mirror and teared up.  Images of Dora the Explorer and Lord Farquad flooded my poor hasty brain.  In my shame, I didn't leave the house for two days.

Now?  I like it.  I really, really like it.  Did I mention I also dyed it black?
What do you think?

I've been going to this simple makeup look a lot this summer: glowy cheeks, teal lower lashline, bronze shadow, pink lips, and a lot of highlighter.  (I forgot to fill in my brows this morning, oops!)

Garnier BB Cream
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer in nude
Sonia Kashuk Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette
Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso
Benefit High Beam (every day!  Love this stuff.)
Benefit Hoola bronzer

TheBalm 'Matt Patel' in crease
Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow Pencil in 'Rehab' on lid
Urban Decay 'Virgin' in inner corner
TheBalm 'Matt Smith' up to browbone
Urban Decay Supercurl Mascara (a new favorite)
Urban Decay 24/7 glide-on pencil 'Flipside' on waterline and lower lashline

Revlon Kissable Balm Stain in 'Darling' (cannot get enough of this product!)

Whew!  That's a lot of makeup.  And a lot less hair.  I think it balances itself out in the end, don't you agree?

.June Gloom

  Jacket, shorts, necklace: Gap
Tank: Hurley
Wedges: BC Footwear
Even though it's raining in these pictures and I am listening to thunder outside, I am so happy to be HOME this June.  Last year at this time I was miserable, pregnant, (not miserable because I was pregnant, mind you) exhausted, in Ohio, and an overall vomitous mass.  I'm an Oregon girl though and through, and I haven't complained about the rain since I returned from the sticky Midwest last year.

My floral shorts and fondant-ish wedges go quite well together, and I really love my coral makeup with the shades of green.  I'll have an "About Face" post up soon so you can get a closer look.  Well, I am off to prepare for the crazy week I have ahead of me.  I feel more accomplished than usual today.  I have a stewy stew stewing in the slow-cooker for my newly postpartum sister, a Swiss chard strata setting in the fridge for tomorrow's breakfast, a talk prepared for the upcoming cardboard box retreat, Vacation Bible School music almost perfected, and a sleeping baby boy right beside me.  (That last one is my greatest accomplishment, let me tell you!  Sheesh.)

Polka-Dots as Promised

Ah, Oregon June.  Your finicky ways are harshing my buzz.  At least I can still blind the internets with my tights-less limbs.
Dress, vest: Gap
Belt: thrifted
Shoes: Miz Mooz
Nails: Sally Hansen Caribbean Coral
Garnier BB Cream
Benefit Box Powder in Sugarbomb
Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer for Dark Circles
Sonia Kashuk Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette
TheBalm Mary Lou-Manizer

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette in Chopper, Foxy, Tease
Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Whiskey
Benefit Bad Gal Mascara

Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in Smoked Peach

I am wearing a different outfit in the close-ups because I changed clothing throughout the day.  Gabriel tends to spit on me a lot.

I am preparing for a "Cardboard Box" retreat for my junior high kids.  It is centered around homelessness, and I am looking forward to it yet dreading it, too.  I really want to find a healthy balance between materialism and helping others.  I know I'll learn a lot, and I already feel convicted to do more for those less fortunate than myself.

I hope your weekend is warmer than mine!

About Face: Shade of Grey

Enough with the makeup, you're thinking!  I vow to have an outfit post up soon... with polka-dots to make up for my slothfulness.  This simple makeup look has been my go-to quite frequently this summer.  I highly recommend the Maybelline Color Tattoos; they bear a striking resemblance, texture, and quality to my Tarte Amazonian Clay cream eyeshadow, but at a third of the price.  I hear they are better than MAC Paint Pots, but I cannot attest to that as I only own one MAC lipstick.  I own four of these cute little pots o' shadow, and I store them upside-down to keep them from drying out.

Clinique Super Balanced Makeup
Benetint (on cheeks)
Sonia Kashuk Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough as Taupe
Urban Decay 24/7 Liquid Eyeliner in Perversion
TheBalm eyeshadow in Matt Smith
Clinique High Impact Mascara

My dear college friend Angel visited me for the weekend.  I haven't seen her in five years!  It was so wonderful to catch up and relive 'old times.'  I miss her already!  The pain of her absence is somewhat eased by the knowledge that my dear brother and his awesome wife and children are steadily on their way to Oregon!  I haven't seen them in a year, and it will be so good to have them living in the area again.  I foresee much quoting of "The Room."

Have a great one!

About Face: Summer Night

Dr. Jart BB Cream
TheBalm Mary-Loumanizer highlight
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Peaceful
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles

Urban Decay primer potion
Urban Decay Baked eyeshadow
TheBalm Matt Smith eyeshadow (up to browbone)
Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara
Urban Decay Radium eyeliner (on lower lashline)
Benefit Eye Bright in inner corner

Revlon Kissable Balm Stain in Sweetheart

There will be a day where I won't wear blue eyeliner, but that day hasn't come just yet!  I turn 30 in August, and I'm milking my remaining twenties for all they're worth.  I definitely have to be in the mood for this particular makeup look.  It's pretty bold and youthful.  The combination of gold, blue, and fuchsia is really fun for a summer night date.  (What's a date?  I don't quite remember...)  If I could do this look over again, I would put more mascara on my lower lashes and blend out the blue a little more.

I highly recommend the Revlon Kissable Balm Stains.  They are easy to apply and last all day.  I actually took a nap with this on, and it stayed beautiful yet didn't rub off on my pillow.  It eventually dried down to an amazing "popsicle" pink-- a real face-brightener.

Could you see yourself trying this?

Losing Myself

Beret: American Apparel
Top, Jeans: Gap
 Sweater: H&M
Shoes: BC Footwear

This outfit is what happens when Oregon decides to rain in June and I want to see if I fit into a size 8.  (I don't.)  Just because it fits doesn't mean it fits.  Obviously, I am still trying to lose baby weight (among other weight) that seems to love my body so much.  My main concern is to become healthier and stronger, but I'd love to be able to crack open the box in the attic stuffed with my size 6 clothing.  I think it will be simultaneously fun and humbling to see my progress on this blog.

I find that in order for myself to be successful, I have to love my body in the shape it is right now.  I am still beautiful; my body is still a temple.  Yes, I am worthy.  I am worthy of exercise, makeup, good and healthy food, a nice haircut, and real clothing instead of sweatpants.
Dr. Jart BB Cream
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circles Concealer
Sonia Kashuk Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette
Benefit Hoola Bronzer
Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso
TheBalm Mary-Loumanizer highlight
Lorac eyeshadow in Serenity, Bronze, and Enlighten
Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara
Clinique lipstick in Beach Coral

Bangs are on the to-do list.  Look at that Tyra Banks fivehead going on!  I grew out my bangs, thinking that a sophisticated mother of two like myself needs to look the part.  HA!

Have a wonderful day, everyone!

Swing of Things

Coat: Gap
Blouse: Old Navy
Skirt: H&M
Shoes: Seychelles
Lipstick: Revlon Lip Butter in Sugar Plum

Where do I begin?!?  I am ecstatic to be back!  So much has happened in the past year, and I can't wait to catch up with you.  I've had an adorable baby boy after a horrific pregnancy, started a new job as a junior high youth minister, Darin lost his job, got a better one, and I am now obsessed with makeup.  Here's the makeup I wore today:
Odd picture, but you get the point:
Garnier BB Cream
Benefit Bella Bamba blush
Benefit Hoola bronzer
TheBalm Mary-Loumanizer highlighter
Pixi Correction Concentrate in Brightening Peach
Benefit Stay Don't Stray (as under eye primer)

Tarte Clean Slate Creaseless Eye Primer
Urban Decay Psychedelic Sister, Woodstock, and Sin eyeshadows
TheBalm 'Matt Smith'
Benefit Bad Gal mascara

Revlon Colorburst lipstick in Soft Nude
Korres Lip Butter in Jasmine

Taylor Swift Wonderstruck (It was FREE, okay?)

When I was pregnant, nothing fit, and anything that did fit made me feel worse.  Gone were the days of my fun hats, colorful tights, and sky-high shoes!  To make myself feel better, I did my makeup every day, whether I went out of the house or not.  I watched many hours of YouTube tutorials throughout the sleepless nights of vomiting and hip/sciatic pain, and learned a lot!  I am no makeup expert, but I am having a wonderful time playing with it.  Cosmetics are a great way of expressing yourself when your clothes don't fit.  I will incorporate some 'beauty' into this ghost of a blog, in hopes to inspire those of you who are interested in makeup but don't know where to start.

Here goes nothing, everybody.  Thank you for coming back!
